This is your reminder that COVID is not over; in fact, we're in the middle of a major surge and there's a new variant, JN.1. To say that COVID is over is both factually incorrect and an undeserved slap in the face to people like me who've had it multiple times. Please consider masking at synagogue to protect those of us who are immunocompromised. I see this as a form of pikuach nefesh. Reply

Coronavirus on My Mind

Today since this virus is found everywhere
I'll stay in my home and won't go anywhere
When people come to visit don't stand so near
If they'll wash their hands then there's nothing to fear

How long will this panic. that's spread so far,
Continue to frighten us wherever we are
You can't run away, there's nowhere to go,
Only HaShem can help, I'm sure that you know

So, we'll pray to HaShem like never before
That this virus will leave and won't be here any more
In China or India or even LA
The people will know that there's no other way

So, raise up your eyes to the One up there,
Be happy and thank Him that He's aware.
Ready to help, so there's nothing to fear.
He'll remove this panic that we have down here.

I talked to a man today
I talked with a man today, an 80+ year old man. I asked him if there was anything I can get him while this Coronavirus scare was gripping America.
He simply smiled, looked away and said:
"Let me tell you what I need! I need to believe, at some point, this country my generation fought for... I need to believe this nation we handed safely to our children and their children...
I need to know this generation will quit being a bunch of sissies...that they respect what they've been given...that they've earned what others sacrificed for."
I wasn't sure where the conversation was going or if it was going anywhere at all. So, I sat there, quietly observing.
"You know, I was a little boy during WWII. Those were scary days. We didn't know if we were going to be speaking English, German or Japanese at the end of the war. There was no certainty, no guarantees like American Reply

Its quite simple, Hashem is telling us to stop mistreating, killing and eating his creatures. You can't mercifully kill an animal that doesn't want to die. Reply

Tzedaka “everyday”? This morning I received the email from Chabad.org with many good ideas. The one idea I don’t know how to accomplish “everyday” is this one I quote here:
<<Tzedakah (Charity) campaign to make personal giving (to the cause of one’s choice) a daily must-do (except for Shabbat and holidays)! >>
How does one accomplish this everyday?!??

My own memory of Dublin:

In 1984 I attended an academic conference at Trinity College in Dublin. I arrived and immediately went for a walk to get to know at least the immediate area, something I always like to do when visiting a new place. I hadn't walked far when I noticed a fellow walking in a rather crooked line, looking as if he had had a good deal to drink. He was heading straight (well, not so straight) for me, and on his shirt was the name "Paddy". He reached me and stood directly in my way, so I couldn't move.
"You Jewish?" he asked, a bit belligerently.
With my black suit and black hat I could hardly deny it. "Yes," said I, hoping I would get away suffering nothing worse than a few unpleasant words.
"Well," said Paddy, "if you should want to find the synagogue, just turn left a block from here and then go straight." Just wanted to be helpful. And though I was only in Dublin for a few days, everyone I met was just as hospitable. Fond memories. Reply

Trouble shopping for Passover now. I had problems , walking without falling and getting exhausted last year. My Family Dr. insisted I get a walker, which I did. The difficulty is getting on buses with it and crossing heavily trafficked streets fast enough with it. Rideshare services such as Lyft cost money, and I am on a fixed income. Also I don't want to overload any vehicle with groceries. I am concerned about Passover and acquiring the basics, like Matzoh, Kosher Grape juice, Macaroons, horseradish. I have cooked a number of things in the past , but getting to the market and finding these things are difficult right now. I am not buying any more chametz at this time. I'm in a small studio apt. with limited storage. Reply
