Event Date: 20 Av 5746 - August 25, 1986
The value of a Temple offering brought when a Jew was unsure whether or not he sinned, was far greater than that brought for a definite sin, when he was certain of his sin. At face value, the definite sin seems more severe and should incur a more costly atonement than a doubtful sin. Yet Rabbi Yonah of Gerona explains that when a person has no doubt that he has sinned, his repentance is more sincere, and an offering of lesser value will suffice. On a personal level, when one remains blind to the fact that his conduct is in need of correction, he is not likely to better it. A little self-reflection can provide the clarity and conviction needed to leave the confusion behind and move forward. |
