Amazingly - The Rebbe Gave Us (in the year 5751) an Acronym
This Year Will Be A Year Of Extraordinary Miracles
Translation p214 note 94
“The Tehhilim has 150 Chapters
This is 15 X 10
Based on this Division the 89th Chapter is part of the cycle that begins with Chapter 81 (and end with Chapter 90.)
Now 81 in Hebrew spells Af אפ – Anger, however it actually has the opposite, namely it is Pa פא which demonstrates the transformation of negative to positive.
(We can note that in the 89th Chapter of Tehhilim the word Af is mentioned 5 times.
This hints on the transformation of the negative of the exile of Pharaoh (the source of all exiles) “The Fifth To Pharaoh”, to the Af in the Positive.
“The Fifth To Pharaoh” in Holiness which (as Kabbalah says) is the source from where all light and revelation emanate.
(Now פא is also the First letters for “I will show you wonders” that the main emphasis here is on revealed miracles, to the human eye, in a good and – revealed good way!)”

Shalom, 5779 I was told at a Chabbad centre was the year of "Good eye" Ain tova. What's 5780 ? Reply
The acronym for the year has not officially been chosen yet. Here are a few options:
Shnas Pidyon- a year of redemption
Shnas Peira'on- a year of repayment
Shnas Psicha- a year of opening (of the heavenly gates)

Has it been chosen now? Reply

I am a little confused (what else is new? lol!) Is this New Year 5771 or 5779? Or some other date? Our modern society is saying that it is 2018 - I would like to know what year it is according to the Jewish people - thank you for your help! Joan McD Reply
The new Jewish calendar year is 5779 :) Reply
Some Jewish terms should be explained in English like for example, the word Aneinu and Shema Koleinu. Most readers may not be able to understand them. Thank you for posting this. Shalom. Reply

Fast day haftorah
Is the special haftorah today a deliberate decision or the product of ironic chance ?
I am that entity, the foreigner. To the best of my knowledge neither my parents or grandparents are jewish. So, I wonder if my jewish friends can understand my relief in the verses of a prophet of such magnitude as Isaiah. Here he is encouraging me , telling me that there is NO misunderstanding. But it is what he informs me that brings tears to my eyes - G-d WILL accept me. I have observed Rosh Hashanah but been unable to hear the shofar in synagogue . I have kept Shabbat holy but not heard anyone say Kiddush.
Today I will fast and remember Gedaliah but as I do, I reflect not only on the murder of one man but 80 others in a land left in pieces and utter chaos. The people chose to burn incense in Egypt rather than simply cross the synagogue threshold as was their right and duty. I wonder if this brought tears to G-d's eyes
I look forward to the day when we can all hear the shofar together.

To anonymous --product of mixed marriage
As you know, only those born of a Jewish mother are born Jewish. But it is equally true to say that only those born of a Gentile mother are born Gentile, and they too have commandments to observe. These are called the Seven Laws of Noah. These are:
Do not commit idolatry
Do not commit blasphemy
Do not commit murder
Do not commit sexual immorality
Do not commit theft
Do not eat the limb from a living animal
Establish courts of justice
These laws are explained in detail in the Mishneh Torah. Chabad has been in the forefront in helping Gentiles in becoming observant of the Seven Laws.
For those of us who are the product of a mixed marriage, (like me!) , following the Seven Laws can bring a sense of wholeness to the internal divisive struggle we often have. There are no strange "Jewish-non Jewish hybrid" religious practices, just authentic Judaism for Gentiles.

The Jewish New Year
You are magnificent!
What would we have done without you?

This is a great asset, Thanks! I really appreciate this listing of all the times and prayers and customs. Chabad.org has formed the foundation of my education, filling my great hunger for knowledge. When reading and writing comments to video, audio and written teachings over the years I've noticed that many posters are converts or people who are not Jewish but just curious. I remember feeling awkward about utilizing the vast resources provided by Chabad online before I converted, before grasping the mission and purpose of the speakers and writers here. But now I am also a Jew in 5771. L'shana tova teketev v'etachetem! (May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year!) This is for everyone on this site this New Year! Reply
what jewish year will it be? it will be the 5,771st year counting from the creation of the world! Reply

what color do we wear? Do we wear white?
The Tur (Orach Chaim 581) writes that the Jewish custom is to not wear black clothing that show a sense of dread, but rather white clothing that show that we are certain that we are headed for a sweet and good year. Many people are not particular about this and just wear happy and bright clothing (it is not brought down in the Shulchan Aruch)..
